On May 11, 2022, City Council adopted a by-law amendment to remove site specific zoning protections for seniors, in order to place a modular housing facility on the parkland at 175 Cummer Ave. The facility is expected to have special services for its tenants, including assistance with substance use, fetal alcohol supports, withdrawal services, and harm reduction (e.g. safe injection / inhalation, needle supplies, naloxone distribution).
Our Member of Provincial Parliament, Stan Cho chose to protect our residents, by working with the Minister of Municipal Affairs (MMA) to block the Ministerial Zoning Order (MZO) preventing us from challenging the City’s decision. This opened up an opportunity for the BCNA and other interested parties to legally challenge the City’s decision to place this facility in our neighbourhood and an independent tribunal called, the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT).
As the site currently has protections granted as part of a previous Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) decision, we remain confident that our appeal will ultimately be successful.  However, this will be a costly exercise and we’re going to need to raise some money to protect our families, our seniors and our schools.  We are asking for home-owners to please give generously to support us in ensuring the safety and security of our seniors, our kids, and families.
